Artist Statement:

Edwina Cooper’s artistic practice is influenced by her experiences as a sailor, with a continued interest in the methods for human experience and interaction with oceanic thresholds.

This new work, created for Beechworth Biennale, finds parallels with the artists’ own interest in sailing and boats, and her Coopering family history. The work explores the material crossover of shaping / bending timber for the purposes of crafting of a vessel (boat or barrel), and their purpose as a threshold to either hold liquid in or keep liquid out.
